Alleghany
County is blessed with friendly folks and lots of breath-taking scenery. Here's a short sampling of nearby attractions and activities:
Your first stop in this cyber tour should be a visit
to High
Country Host , a tourism bureau serving the five-county area
in North Carolina's High Country (Ashe, Alleghany, Avery, Mitchell,
and Watauga counties).
We are located in Alleghany County but are also close to Ashe County. Learn
more about both these counties by visiting the
Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce site, where you can learn about the history, people, and
scenery of Alleghany County and the Ashe County site to
learn more about what there is to see and do in Ashe County.
Canoeing, fishing, or picnicking on the New River is
a special treat; enjoy a half or full day along the second-oldest river in the world.

The Blue
Ridge Parkway is only three miles from Burgiss Farm Bed and
Breakfast. This scenic highway runs along the crest of the Appalachian
Mountains, connecting Georgia with the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
Doughton Park, the Parkway's largest recreation area, is only nine
miles away. If you would like more information about preserving

Like hiking, waterfalls, picnicking, and rock climbing? Try Stone Mountain State Park , the largest state park in North Carolina.
The Appalachian Trail is
only twenty minutes away. Avid backpackers and day hikers love the route through the Mount Rogers area!
Bouldering and more hiking is available in
Grayson Highlands State Park .
There's a lot of Mountain Biking trails close to our Bed & Breakfast.
Ever tried the Virginia Creeper or the New River Trail?
How about a trail ride, pardner? Horses are available
for rent nearby at Burnt
Hill Stables where they have trail riding, guided trail riding, horse
boarding and riding lessons.
Six championship golf courses are within a twenty-five mile radius, and
eight tennis courts are just a hop and a skip away.
Shoppers will enjoy local craft and antique stores
in Sparta, Laurel Springs, and West Jefferson. The West Jefferson
Arts District features more than a dozen galleries, outdoor murals,
crafts shops and restaurants. See

Or you can enjoy a leisurely visit to the beautiful
gardens, showrooms, workshop and decks of the Creekhouse
Garden Gallery located not far from our Bed & Breakfast,
on the way to West Jefferson. Picnic along bold Roan Creek, fish,
take a nature walk, birdwatch and photograph the pristine area.
Shop for unique art and ornaments for your garden, house and yard.
Some of the first fresco works in the South can
be found inside two unassuming churches in Ashe County. Fresco is
the art of painting on fresh, moist plaster with pigments dissolved
in water, an ancient Italian limestone artwork technique. Ben Long
painted three frescoes at St. Mary's in West Jefferson, "Mary
Great with Child","John the Baptist", and "The
Mystery of Faith". He also painted "The Last Supper"
at Holy Trinity Church in Glendale Springs. These religious murals
draw over a hundred thousand visitors each year.
If you visit us in the winter there are three ski
resorts are within a one and a half hours' drive: Sugar
Mountain , Beech
Mountain, and Appalachian
Ski Mountain . Or you can just relax in front of a warm fire. When you visit us
the choice is up to you.
